As a Christian counselor with more than 16 years of experience, I deeply desire for you to understand how powerfully you are loved by God. One of my aims is for you to gain an increased sense of hope and a deeper understanding of your identity in Christ, leading to an enduring motivation to initiate and maintain positive change in your life. You will be able to measure your own progress as we link each session to the previous one by creating realistic and tangible goals for growth, centered around Christ and your relationship with Him.

About

I think at times the idea of counseling can sound stiff, inauthentic, or formal. My clients should know that I don’t operate that way. We will build a sincere, authentic, and trusting therapeutic relationship. I will be completely myself, which will definitely include professionalism and competency to help build your trust that I can be a benefit to you, but which will absolutely also include my humor, relatability, and genuine care for you as a person. We’re not just here to check a box and meet some goals. We’ll use authentic relationship to get you to a better place. Together. And if that isn’t enough to persuade you, I also have chocolate.

My Goal as a Christian Counselor

In addition to helping you experience alleviated symptoms, greater peace, and healthier relationships, my primary goal is to point you to Christ. No matter the history, experiences, relationships, fears, or circumstances that bring you to my office, my aim is to take you directly to the truth of God’s Word. There, we see who God has been, is, and will be in the past, present, and future of our lives. We see how He specifically and actively loves us, no matter what we’ve done or how much we struggle. We see how much He values us and as a result how we have meaning, purpose, and significance in Him. And finally, we see from Scripture how we can and should specifically respond to His love with a confident faith and a continual hope because of what Jesus has first done for us.

What I Offer in Christian Counseling

I offer a place where you can look at the big picture of your life in order to best understand both your current challenges and the resulting anxieties of the future. Starting with how you came to experience your symptoms in the first place, we will observe so-called “truths” you may have learned earlier in life that have led to misunderstandings about God, yourself, and others. Once those internalizations are identified, we will contrast them with the truth of God’s Word and replace them with a practical application of Scripture, using therapeutic tools as a framework for growth.

My Approach to Christian Counseling

My therapeutic process includes building a foundation of identity in Christ, followed by the application of biblical truth at an individual level. Through our time together, you can expect to experience a deeper understanding of the Bible, who God is, who we are in and because of Him, and how we can practically respond to His love for us and live out His specific purpose and calling for our lives in gratitude, faithfulness, and hope.

Biography

Qualifications & Experience

I hold a BA in Pre-Counseling from Moody Bible Institute and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Gonzaga University. I have over 16 years of experience working in mental health and over 10 years of experience hosting children of families in crisis.

My Call to Christian Counseling

When I was a high school senior, I realized that I was spending more time asking my friends questions about their lives than I was sharing about my own. I noticed I cared deeply about how they were growing and changing in one direction or another, and wanted to become a support during that time of growth. That initial interest in others’ lives eventually led to the discovery of the Lord’s calling to be available to anyone, especially those who desire a stronger relationship with Christ.

More About Me/On a Personal Note

I have been married for over 17 years and a foster/adoptive parent for 10 years. We currently have seven children in our home, and wouldn’t have it any other way. I have been involved in children’s and youth ministries at my church for many years, and coach middle school baseball. Children are an enormous part of my life, and I find that reality to be both energizing and fulfilling.

Apart from raising kids, I also very much enjoy sports. Baseball, basketball, football, golf, you name it. If we can play it, I’m in. When not playing or coaching, I also love reading, traveling (nowhere exotic, though; remember, I have a million kids), and doing literally anything with my wife. Yes, even laundry.

I also like singing at the top of my lungs alone in my car, but don’t tell anyone about that one.

Counseling for Teens

In our time together we will discuss your concerns as well as themes of identity, value, significance, and purpose from a Scriptural perspective. In addition to helping you gain practical tools to work through the challenging symptoms and circumstances you are facing, one of my goals would be to help you grow into a godly adult with your own faith, your own identity in Christ, and your own individual purpose that He has planned before the foundation of the world, in spite of whatever negative experiences you have had thus far.

Sex and Porn Addiction

I offer a nonjudgmental space where you can experience an extension of the Lord’s grace and love for you. In our work together we will start by exploring the function of the addictive behavior, i.e. what perceived need that compulsive action is meant to meet. When that has been identified, we will use biblical perspectives concerning identity, faith, and relationship with our Heavenly Father to replace existing theological presuppositions with truth. Finally, we will create action plans and goals to maintain purity with God’s help.

Bipolar Disorder

As your counselor I will seek to help you identify specific patterns and symptoms that allow for you to discern your current emotional state/episode, with coping strategies and accountability for both depressive and manic/hypomanic states. I will also help you embrace your identity with Christ rather than identity from a disorder or diagnosis.

Trauma

In trauma counseling, we will work to decrease the potency of traumatic memories and experiences by differentiating who you are at present with who you used to be. Emphasis is placed on God as we see Him in the Psalms (stronghold, shield, deliverer, strength, refuge) as a reminder that His sovereignty over our lives combined with His faithfulness to us is what ultimately gives us the peace we need. As a result, we can walk with Him in confidence and faith.

Grief and Loss

We will work through your individual process of grief, staying away from avoidance or repression of negative emotion. We will acknowledge and confront our pain with the reminder that God is our comfort and our deliverer, and that the Holy Spirit is the One  who provides the peace that passes all understanding. A big theme in these conversations is earthly perspective vs. eternal perspective.
