Choosing Positive Reactions to Manage Stress
Dr. Diandra Kissack
It’s no secret that life is full of surprises. With technology, bad news travels quickly. Bad news can trigger stress for many people. Stress, in turn, triggers health problems. The general population in America today is becoming more stress-aware. More people are deciding to get healthy and learn to manage stress. By choosing to manage stress, individuals can enhance their quality of life. Stress management tips often include understanding positive reactions.
As Christians, our lifestyle should reflect peace rather than chaos. Chaos can be consuming and destructive not only for ourselves but also for those around us. This is not the life God intends for us. Stress management is a choice that an individual must make to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Worrying does not change anything about circumstances or the outcome; it only changes the way our body and mind feel.
Scripture is clear about the fruitlessness of worry:
And which of you by worrying can add a day to his life’s span? – Luke 12:25, NASB
Knowing the Symptoms of Stress
It’s normal to experience stressful situations in life. Stress can be found on the job, at home, raising kids, going to the grocery store, and even driving in traffic. No one is completely free from experiencing stressful situations. The key thing to remember is that managing stress decreases its effects.
Stress affects a person’s body and mind, which can result in disturbances at work, school, or even at home. To react to stress positively, it’s important to identify the symptoms that come with stress. Here is a short list of the most common symptoms of stress:
- Constant fatigue
- Insomnia
- Digestion issues
- Headaches
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Mood swings
- Weight changes
- Inability to concentrate
- Fatigue
- Body tension
All of these symptoms may not be present when experiencing stress, but most of the time, people experience at least five. Whether you experience two symptoms or six, it is still important to understand how to react positively to stress.
Tips for Stress Management
Reacting positively can be done in a multitude of ways. Understanding how to react positively when dealing with stress can decrease the amount of time you spend worrying. Some of the ways to react positively revolve around thought patterns, and others revolve around activities. The following stress management tips can help reduce the effects of stress on the body and mind.
Maintain a dedicated quiet time and read Scripture
Having a dedicated time of day for Bible reading can greatly increase how an individual faces stressful situations. This can also help create mindful quotes that can be recalled when a person is feeling overwhelmed in certain circumstances.
Exercise for fun
Keeping physical activity at the forefront of a daily routine will also help reduce the negative impact of stress. Engaging in exercise in a fun way promotes a more joyful outlook on the situation you may encounter. One of the best ways to make it fun is to include a friend.
Write down the good stuff
Keeping a journal doesn’t have to be mundane and boring. Grab some markers, colors, and fun stickers, and take time to write down the good stuff. Journal about the moments of gratitude you have experienced, and keep track of the inspirational things you’ve seen in a day. These types of things can relieve stress and bring out the best part of the day.
Delight in the pleasures of life
Just as life has stresses, it also has pleasures. Pleasure can come in a variety of ways depending on the person. Take time to enjoy your favorite hobbies or experiences regularly. For instance, camping, sitting around a fire pit, or simply curling up with a good book are pleasures in life that are considered positive reactions to stress.
Set boundaries and reduce negative people
When it comes to positive reactions to stress, it is important to maintain boundaries to reduce negative people or a toxic mindset. Keeping positive people in your life will encourage you to maintain positive reactions while you try to manage stress. This also includes encouraging yourself and having positive self-talk.
Remember it’s okay to laugh
Even though you may be facing a stressful situation, always remember that it’s OK to find humor in the things that happen every day. Learning to find laughter in the middle of stress is one of the best ways to relieve stress, reduce its effects, and find the positive aspects of the situation.
Take on a self-challenge
Sometimes setting a goal or challenge can help with stress management. Trying a new sport can become a way of refocusing your thoughts. An exercise challenge can not only help you refocus, but it will also promote a healthier lifestyle. Consider all kinds of things that could be challenges, then choose ones that appeal to your interests. You could have a reading challenge, a gardening challenge, or even a coffee challenge. The key is to choose something fun and challenge yourself.
Volunteer to help others
Helping others through volunteer work has been proven to reduce stress. By helping others, you create a mindset that encourages positivity. You could also choose a way to brighten someone’s day with a simple gesture of friendship. For instance, picking up an extra cup of coffee in the morning as you head to the office. Doing things for others helps you feel better.
Keep track of the positive things
As you journal each night, you may want to dedicate one page to the positive things of the day. Listing three positive things each day can encourage you to become mindful during the day to look for the positive, even in the middle of a stressful situation.
You can’t change things
One of the most important stress management tips is to realize you can’t always change the situation. There are times when things happen, and we cannot control them. Those are the times we have to realize we do what we can and let the rest go.
Rest is best
The way stress can affect the body can cause a person to lose sleep. To overcome this problem, it’s helpful to have some form of relaxation that will promote a restful night. Cell phones and TV are some of the major contributors to lack of sleep. The suggestion is to turn off the devices and the TV and read a magazine or book to help calm your mind.
Organization brings peace
Wherever your workspace is, it is important to have an organized space. Being able to locate the tools or resources you need to complete a job will reduce the chance of being stressed because of clutter. A home that is clean and organized can also reduce feelings of chaos, not just for you but for the entire family.
Therapy helps
In cases of extreme anxiety, it is beneficial to work with a Christian counselor. This can help identify triggers, understand symptoms, implement techniques, and create a faith-based plan that promotes a positive mindset. It’s OK to realize that sometimes you can’t do it on your own. Getting help from a Christian counselor improves your stress response.
